'No mourners are expected': Plea for Irish in UK to attend funeral of man who died alone

No relatives of John Joseph O’Brien could be found.

A SOCIETY WHICH looks after the Irish in the UK has issued an appeal for mourners to turn up to the funeral of a man who died alone in Manchester.

The Council of Irish Associations has turned to its members and asked them to show up to the funeral of John Joseph O’Brien who died at his home in Hulme, Manchester, earlier this year.

Attempts had been made by Manchester Police to find O’Brien’s next-of-kin. Unfortunately, no family members could be traced and the council of associations decided to give him a funeral

A statement from the council read: “The Manchester bereavement service has had to arrange a funeral for Mr O’Brien.

“It will take place at Manchester Crematorium on Wednesday 27 September at 10am.

No mourners are expected so please if any of the associations can send some members or if any of Irish Manchester’s community are able to spare an hour to help give your fellow country man a decent well attended funeral it will be much appreciated.
